CONCEPT

Liminal-obsessed anthropologist finally has powers of her own.

POWERS

inorganic matter manipulation;
Capable of manipulating, shaping, and telekinetically moving solid inorganic substances like metal, stone, gems, glass, and carbon. She does not seem to be capable of manipulating liquids or gases in the same fashion.

Taryn is a long way from discovering the full extent of these powers, and currently struggles to manipulate anything that weighs more than a few pounds or execute transformations that require fine precision, although she has been practicing writing using pure graphite.

diamond form;
Capable of transforming her body into a solid diamond form. In this transformed state, Taryn is much more durable as well as stronger and faster.

PERSONALITY

❖ Deeply creative. While she was very prone to daydreaming as a teenager, she more often funnels this into creative pursuits these days. A prolific writer, she's been putting out a novel a year for the last decade and a half. Writing is an escape for Taryn.

❖ Precise and calculated. Thinks everything through a million times before acting on it. Definitely the kind of person who is always having imaginary conversations with people in her head before she actually talks to them about anything.

❖ Pathologically avoidant. Has commitment issues and isn't prone to long-term relationships. When she is in one, she prizes her independence over everything else, making her a difficult and uncompromising partner.

❖ Has a shrewd and dry sense of humor that is very love it or hate it. While her personality isn't out-and-out abrasive, she does tend to make petty enemies wherever she goes.

❖ Very suspicious of other people's intentions and rarely believes the best in people. Although she tries to keep this under wraps when interacting with people face-to-face, you can see this in her writing, where her protagonists are often deeply flawed and selfish people.

❖ Absolutely does not know when to let things go.

APPEARANCE

5'8", lean build, blue eyes, brown hair kept in a neat bob. Dresses simply and fashionably, although she's not flashy or ostentatious.

HISTORY

❖ Taryn had a thoroughly normal and middle American childhood, which continues to be a constant source of chagrin for her. She suffered very few personal hardships, struggled with little, and had the support she needed. None of this is very interesting or makes for a very good story, in her opinion, and she doesn't talk about it much.

❖ The first rifts opened when she was in college, and she was immediately obsessed with them. She changed majors from creative writing to anthropology and devoted her life to studying the nascent and evolving culture of liminals.

❖ Although most of her published work is nonfiction, she does have a handful of NYT bestselling novels which are massively popular. These are sort of combination romance/mystery novels which feature primarily liminal main characters.

❖ Had absolutely no qualms using the money and connections her brother made through his own hard work to her benefit, and was a frequent moocher off the Payne family when the twins were growing up. After she made her own money on her novels, she was around less, although she still did turn up for holidays and major life events.

❖ A longtime IRIS collaborator, Taryn has been intermittently working with various stations' research departments for fifteen years. She spent some time at Enodia station when it first opened, getting to know the founding staff before moving on to another assignment.

❖ Developed liminal abilities last year. This has been a bit of a shake-up for her public image as her detractors have always fixated on the fact that she is not a liminal herself, and several online rumors have even circulated that she may be faking it. Unfortunately for everyone, she isn't.

❖ Decided to return to Enodia partially because her niece is here now but mostly because she heard a rumor something interesting was happening with their rift.

NOTES

Notorious with long-time IRIS employees for using her coworkers as characters in her novels, although she denies ever having done this. Her most recent novel features a character who is pretty blatantly based on Thomasin Hendricks.
